Matt Saunders: Neon in Daylight
April 17 through May 10, 2014
2727 S. La Cienega Boulevard, Los Angeles , CA 90034
Matt Saunders’ stop-motion films don’t involve cameras. Instead, he shines light onto photosensitive paper through painted linen or mylar. The result is pretty textural and occasionally abstract, and his last show had a slow, romantic feel to it.
For this show, he’s lifted imagery from Joseph Cornell’s collage film Rose Hobart (1936) and the film East of Borneo (1931), featuring the actual actress Rose Hobart. The hand-coloring of the imagery looks like it might be gorgeous.
