Beverly Semmes has been making sculptural, often oversized dresses out of various materials — crushed velvet, wool, acrylic thread — since the early 1990s. Two of the dresses she made between 1992 and 1994, a pink organza one and a black velvet one with a sleeve that’s long enough to wind back and forth across a gallery floor, are, according to the artist and her gallery, particularly significant and helped establish her as an artist. Only those dresses will feature in Semmes’ new show at Shoshana Wayne.
