Nikki Pressley: Elsewhere, in Another Form and Connection, Reflection Curated by Nikki Pressley
October 26 through November 30, 2013
969 Chung King Road, Los Angeles, CA 90012
Nikki Pressley’s first solo exhibition at Charlie James Gallery includes drawings and domestic objects that echo each other–for instance, the pattern from the back of mid-century-inspired chair also appears as a rubbing on a piece of paper laid out on a low-to-the-ground pedestal. In the second room of the gallery, a bamboo fife supposedly played by a man named Othar “Otha” Turner hangs on the wall, while recordings of this invented character’s music plays. The artist, who graduated from Cal Arts in 2008 and often uses her word-based work, drawings and objects to probe complicated histories, also curated the group show in Charlie James’ basement.
