October 26 through November 30, 2013
1031 N. Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90012
Artist Rick Bahto’s exhibition at Jancar Jones Gallery in Chinatown features his “Compositions,” a series based on roadside still lifes he’s been photographing over the past year and a half. He might see a pile of mattresses or other refuse out the car window and pull over to photograph the scene. Then, once he’s printed the photographs, he will rearrange them, interact with them in another setting and then rephotograph or film them again, now that they’re part of some other setting or event. Bahto, who is L.A.-based, has taught at the storefront Echo Park Film Center and collaborated with composers and performers, which means his work pops up in a variety of contexts, often with other creatives on the bill. Over the course of this show, he will screen a few films of his own but also a series of short films by artist Pablo Valencia. Valencia’s films are of windows and Bahto will project them on Jancar Jones’s big storefront window between November 10th and 12th.
