Jemima Wyman: Effacing Power
April 27 through May 18, 2013
6026 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90036
The artist utilizes painting, photography, collage and fabric sculpture to transform images from Occupy Steubenville, Free Pussy Riot, Black Bloc in Egypt and other protest movements. Her highly patterned works incorporate domestic craft techniques (such as quilting and faux finish painting) to investigate the clothing and masks worn by protesters including paisley bandanas, keffiyehs and camouflage, all of which are ubiquitous in current protest and resistance movements. Wyman explores the idea that the clothed body is often the first point of protest and demonstrates how masks and disguises provide collective power and protection in conflict zones.
