Yvonne Rainer: Dances and Films

The Getty Center

May 27 through October 12, 2014

Yvonne Rainer is an icon at this point, as a choreographer and a video artist. She's always pretty raw, a little arduous and deliberately poking at prettiness.

Steve McQueen: Drumroll

MOCA at The Pacific Design Center

June 28 through September 21, 2014

MOCA co-owns Drumroll, the video installation artist-director Steve McQueen won the Turner Prize for in 1999, and showed it once in 2005. It's showing it again, now that McQueen is a famous Oscar winner (for 12 Years a Slave).

Country: Portraits of an American Sound

Annenberg Space for Photography

May 31 through September 28, 2014

Les Leverett was a staff photographer at the Grand Old Opry for three decades. Leigh Wiener photographed John Cash looking rough and tumble. They're in the show and featured in the half-hour documentary that will play at the center of the Annenberg's weird, circular space -- lots of photographers and musicians talking shop.

Trains

Night Gallery

August 23 through September 27, 2014

Artist Sterling Ruby, known for his drippy stalagmite sculptures, curated this show that’s about the relationship (the trainwreck?) between photography and sculpture. It’s called “Trains” because, according to the all-caps press release, “THE EXHIBITION WILL BE LAID OUT IN LINES” but “THE BOUNDARIES ARE DERAILED,” among other reasons.

Michael Parker: The Unfinished

The Unfinished

March 16 through September 16, 2014

Michael Parker, who's always combining infrastructure (or some kind of established structure) and community activity, is digging an obelisk-shaped ditch along the very industrial banks of the channelized LA River. It's a "137-foot to-scale replica" of an Ancient Egyptian site known as “The Unfinished Obelisk,” hence Parker's title. He'll host various events throughout the process, which will probably be listed here.
