Yvonne Rainer: Dances and Films

The Getty Center

May 27 through October 12, 2014

Yvonne Rainer is an icon at this point, as a choreographer and a video artist. She's always pretty raw, a little arduous and deliberately poking at prettiness.

Twin Visions: Jerome Witkin & Joel Peter Witkin

Jack Rutberg Gallery

June 1 through August 30, 2014

Estranged identical twin brothers who both became artists are being reunited after 50 years, and it's causing a stir, getting public radio coverage and becoming the subject of a documentary --  that stir is why Jack Rutberg is extending the show through the end of summer.

Culver City

John Weston and Katie Thoma

Venice6114

May 31 through September 13, 2014

Last time Katie Thoma showed here, she turned the space into a post-apocalytpic party scene. This time she's showing with John Weston, who also does intense installations, with his paintings hung in psychedelic bedrooms or against walls he's painted.

Unbound: Six Women Artists

Los Angeles Center for Digital Art (LACDA)

July 10 through August 30, 2014

Three of the six women artists who work digitally -- including Deborah Cornell, who's showing her funnily layered digital prints with hands in them -- have solo installation. Three are expatriates, working in video and in a group show.

Michael Parker: The Unfinished

The Unfinished

March 16 through September 16, 2014

Michael Parker, who's always combining infrastructure (or some kind of established structure) and community activity, is digging an obelisk-shaped ditch along the very industrial banks of the channelized LA River. It's a "137-foot to-scale replica" of an Ancient Egyptian site known as “The Unfinished Obelisk,” hence Parker's title. He'll host various events throughout the process, which will probably be listed here.

San Diego

Spanish Sojourns: Robert Henri and the Spirit of Spain

San Diego Museum of Art

March 29 through September 9, 2014

American artist Robert Henri (1865-1929) kept traveling to Spain in the first two decades of the 1900s, painting portraits while there of bull fighters, singers, gypsies and others. His Spanish paintings have rarely been shown together before now.
