Whitehouse Chokes on Bad SOPA, Sends Back to Kitchen
At least the bill's got teeth!
The Whitehouse has chimed in against the upcoming SOPA anti-online piracy bill, hailed by big media, but feared by internet companies and free-speech advocates. In a blog post yesterday, Victoria Espinel, Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator at Office of Management and Budget, Aneesh Chopra, U.S. Chief Technology Officer, and Howard Schmidt, Special Assistant to the President and Cybersecurity Coordinator for National Security Staff, while agreeing that widespead online piracy by foreign comapanies needs to be addressed by legislation, said that such legislation must not create censorship, impede new technologies, or alter the architecture of the internet itself and called on Congress to come up with a narrower, more effective bill in the coming year.
